What an amazing experience the past couple of days have been. Ian Hernandez showed a maturity beyond his years with his composure and intelligence of the Spanish language. He went up against 31 of the best spellers in the state of Texas. The entirety of the competition went on for 22 rounds, beginning at 9 am and ending at 4 pm. It was a long day, but these students were there to compete!  After several rounds, Ian missed his word by one letter and ended up 18th overall. That is 18th in the WHOLE state of Texas! “I am beyond proud of Ian and how well he’s done.”, said Coach Rendón. Ian will have one more opportunity to compete as an 8th grader next school year. 

Ian Hernandez will be competing at the State Spanish Spelling Bee today in El Paso, TX. Ian is an 8th grader at De La Paz Middle School. This is the inaugural year for this type of Spelling Bee, where all words, questions, and any inquiries are spoken in Spanish. Ian’s journey began at the District competition where he placed 1st. He then went on to the Regional competition held in Corpus Christi where he competed against 7 other school districts. He was runner-up, placing 2nd after a very competitive round. The top 10 finishers will advance to the National Spanish Spelling Bee to be held in Albuquerque, NM next month. We wish Ian lots of good luck as he represents Riviera ISD. Our students had an incredible experience at the School to Scrubs Rural Medicine Camp at Texas A&M! 🩺 They explored the world of healthcare through hands-only CPR, skeletal anatomy, and public health sessions. They also gained hands-on clinical experience in ultrasound, laparoscopic surgery fundamentals, NG tube intubation, and Stop the Bleed training. A big step toward future careers in medicine! 👩🏻‍⚕️🧑🏻‍⚕️🩻
