Mrs. Cannon's Freshman English classes recently engaged in a student-led Socratic Seminar discussing Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death," facilitated by Ms. Villarreal, the student teacher. Socratic Seminars are structured discussions that encourage critical thinking and articulate expression, allowing students to delve deeply into literary works. These seminars emphasize inquiry over information and dialogue over debate, fostering a collaborative learning environment. In preparation for the seminar, students explored open-ended questions to analyze the themes and symbolism within Poe's narrative. In particular, the students examined The Red Death's intrusion into a secluded castle, and how it reflects Poe's perspective on the inevitability of death. Such discussions encourage students to support their viewpoints with textual evidence, enhancing their analytical skills. The student-led nature of the seminar empowers students to take ownership of their learning, promoting active engagement and deeper understanding. By articulating their thoughts and considering diverse perspectives, students develop critical thinking and communication skills which are essential for academic success. Our students are excited to dive deeper into discussions using the Socratic Seminar strategy! It's inspiring to see them engage thoughtfully and collaborate with their peers. We can't wait to see where these meaningful conversations take them!
